This easy allergy-friendly Valentine’s Day puppy chow is perfect for any February celebration. While puppy chow is usually made with peanut butter, I make mine nut-free by melting down chocolate sunflower seed butter and allergy-friendly chocolate chips. Then, all you have to do is pour the melted chocolate mixture over the rice chex, and coat them in powdered sugar! The last part is to add whatever fun treats you like to make it Valentine’s Day themed. The recipe and ingredients below are gluten-free, nut-free, vegan, and free of the top 8 allergens. You can use any mix-ins you like when you make this recipe, or switch up any that aren’t safe for your allergies! I used seasonal skittles, starburst heart shaped jellybeans, and sprinkles to keep this recipe top 8 allergen free!
What You Need to Make Allergy-Friendly Valentine’s Day Puppy Chow
- Rice chex cereal: You can use corn chex instead, but I think rice chex work the best for this recipe!
- Chocolate sunflower butter: There are a variety of nut-free chocolate butters on the market to choose from. My current favorite is the 88 Acres dark chocolate sunflower butter. All their products are delicious and made in a top 9 allergen free facility.
- Dark chocolate chips: I love using Guittard chocolate chips in my recipes because all their chocolate is produced in a nut-free facility.
- Powdered sugar: To avoid lumps, I recommend sifting your powdered sugar before adding it to the chocolate coated chex!
- Skittles: I found a seasonal pack, called Skittles Love Mix, which has red, white, and pink colored skittles! Skittles are one of my favorite allergy-friendly candies! If you don’t have nut allergies and want this recipe to be more chocolatey, you can use seasonal M&Ms.
- Starburst hearts: These Starburst heart shaped jelly beans were such a fun find! They come in strawberry and cherry flavors and are free of the top 8 allergens.
- Sprinkles: I used the classic sprinkles in red and white colors!
