A play on puppy chow (also called muddy buddies!), reindeer chow starts with a classic base of chocolate-covered chex cereal. To make this easy allergy-friendly reindeer chow, all you have to do is melt down chocolate sunflower butter and dark chocolate chips, pour the chocolate mixture over the rice chex, and coat them in powdered sugar. Then all you have to do is add whatever fun treats you like to make it holiday-themed! Common mix-ins include Christmas colored sprinkles, nut-free M&Ms, crushed candy canes, pretzels, mini sunflower seed butter cups, and seasonal candies. The recipe below is gluten-free, nut-free, vegan, and free of the top 8 allergens! Feel free to use any mix-ins you like when you make this recipe, but my personal favorites are gluten-free pretzels and allergy-friendly chocolate candies!
What You Need to Make Allergy-Friendly Reindeer Chow
- Rice chex cereal: You can use corn chex as well, but I think rice chex taste better!
- Chocolate sunflower butter: There are a variety of nut-free chocolate butters on the market, but my current favorite is the 88 Acres dark chocolate sunflower butter. All their products are delicious and made in a top 9 allergen free facility.
- Dark chocolate chips: I love using Guittard chocolate chips in my recipes because all their chocolate is nut-free.
- Powdered sugar: Better if sifted!
- Gluten-free pretzels: The grain-free pretzels from Savor Street are super crunchy and tasty amazing in this recipe! These pretzels are all baked in a nut-free kitchen.
- Peppermint chocolate candies: One of my favorite allergy-friendly candy brands, No Whey Chocolate, makes the BEST dupe for nut-free m&ms! They even have these ones that I used, which are peppermint flavored!
- Mini sunflower seed butter cups: There are lots of brands that now make these, but I used ones from No Whey Chocolate in this recipe because I love their small size!
